1950年代はじめ、「各業種のプロフェッショナル用ツールとしての腕時計」というコンセプトを引っ提げたロレックス社のレン・ポール・ジェネレは職業ダイバーに向けた本格仕様の防水時計を発表する。それがサブマリーナーだ。
スイス時計界にあってどちらかというと後発メーカーであったロレックス社は、他社との差別化をはかるために、サブマリーナーが発表されるずいぶん前から、自前のオイスター技術の優位性を武器とし、そして成長してきた背景がある。なので「各業種のプロフェッショナル」に職業ダイバーが挙がるのは当然の帰結だったのだろうと想像できる。
ロレックス社1社の功績ではないにしろ、その後現在に至るまでダイバーズウォッチはダイバーに限らず広く一般の人々が日常生活で使う時計としても定番化していった。サブマリーナーは結果的にダイバーズウォッチの一つの顔を定義する結果となる。それゆえ、サブマリーナーは現在最も人気のあるダイバーズウォッチの一つである。
ロレックス社は寡黙な会社なのでオフィシャルな情報が少ない。にも拘らず人気者はより深い研究対象となるのが常で、1953年頃に作られたと言われる最初期のサブマリーナー(別名の試作品も存在する)から現行品に至るまで非常に細かい仕様の違いと変遷が発見されている。

Ref.1680はデイト表示が付いた初のサブマリーナーであり、1966年発表とされている。1982年まで製造されたが、Ref.1680には前期と後期がある。前期はSUBMARINERの文字が赤で通称「赤サブ」、後期はすべて白文字「白サブ」である。前期には更に細かく第1期から第4期までの定義が知られている。もちろん全て赤サブだが、第1期と第2期はメートル表記がフィート表記に先立つ通称「メーター・ファースト」。そして、第1期から第4期まで文字フォントの感じや位置関係が微妙に異なっている。Ref.1680の場合、こういったダイヤル文字の分類作業が取引価格の違いを生んでいる。特に前期第4期と後期は色以外フォントが同じで、白文字の上に赤を後から乗せたような粗悪品の存在を誰もが容易に想像することができるが、実際そういうものが多く存在するのかはよく分らない。

写真の時計は赤サブ第3期である。ケースのシリアルNo.243xxxxからは1968年製とも言えるが、裏蓋内側の刻印がI70で1970年1月～3月になるのでそちらを採用してここでは1970年製としたい。(最終アッセンブリーが1970年以降である可能性もあるが。) ブレスレットは9315巻きブレス(FF380)。ムーブメントはCal.1570にデイト追加したCal.1575でハック機能なし。(ただしムーブの刻印は1570のまま。)

非常にきれいなダイヤルの黒地とヤケはじめたインデックスと赤文字、これらが織りなす色バランスは絶妙だ。ベタだと思うがやはり味わいを感じてしまう。ベゼルのヤケも雰囲気あり。デイトのフォントもポップだ。それと切り立つドーム風防も素晴らしい機能美だと思う。

In 1953, Rene-Paul Jeanneret at Rolex launched a wristwatch specifically designed for professional divers along with his new watch strategy which was "watch as a practical tool for professional". Of course the name of it is Submariner.
In fact Rolex was relatively younger watch company among lots of watch companies in Switzerland so it was very important for Rolex to have some unique selling point which was for example water resistance technology known as Oyster. Rolex had already succeeded by water resistance watches by the time around 1950. So we can easily understand that the diver was chosen for one of "professional" by Rolex.
I don't think Rolex was the only one contributed to the today's situation, but actually the diver's watch came to be much general and very popular watch in the end rather than very niche professional tool. Submariner is one of most popular watch because it defined one typical image of diver's watch which is popular category today.

In spite of the fact that Rolex has been limiting to open company's information officially, historical specification difference of Submariner has been getting into more and more detail by lots of research and differentiation by collectors and dealers.
Ref.1680 was the first Submariner which carried the date function. It was launched in 1966 and manufactured until 1982. The early version and the later version is defined for Ref.1680 usually. The early version is called "red Submariner" especially because the logo of Submariner is written in red ink. The red Submariner has also more detail definition from Mk.1 to Mk.4 today. Mk.1 and 2 are called "meter first" because you can see 200m/660ft instead of 660ft/200m on the dial. Also you can find very slight difference in written characters' shape and position on the dial through Mk.1 to Mk.4. All these dial differences create price variation in the market.
Anybody can easily and naturally imagine the possibility that somebody vicious can put red ink over white logo. But I don't have any idea if there is many in reality.

The red Submariner you see here has Mk.3 dial. The serial number is 243xxxx which represents it was made in 1968. But the case back shows I70 which means 1970 January to March. So I like to adopt 1970 for manufacturing year of this watch. The bracelet is 9315 (FF380) in its beautiful condition. The movement is caliber 1575 (1570 + date) without hack.
It may be too usual impression for Ref.1680 but I very much like the color balance among matte black, suntanned ivory hour index and red/white characters. Faded bezel is nicely raising antique taste. The font of the date number is cute. The dome plastic glass is sticking out very much.

スルタナ・ウォッチは1937年にスイスのラ・ショー・ドゥ・フォンに創業した時計メーカー。
写真はダイヤルに青と黒の文字を配した精悍な顔つきのクロノグラフ。ブレスレットはフランスのZRC製エクステンションタイプが付いている。このブレスは長さ調整機構が付いており中々の優れ物。
裏蓋内側の引っ掻き文字は、SWISS、7776、LLD262T、LLD263、LLD364R、LLD664T、LLD165T、LLD762R、rove de compteurと読めるが、達筆すぎて判別が難しいため、読み違いの可能性もある。

Sultana Watch was founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland in 1937.
Here you see is a chronograph which has blue and black numerals on the dial. The bracelet which has clever but simple idea for adjustment of length was made by ZRC known as a French watch manufacturer.
The case back has many numbers and alphabets by hand scratch on its backside. I can read them like "SWISS, 7776, LLD262T, LLD263, LLD364R, LLD664T, LLD165T, LLD762R" and "rove de compteur".

スイスのビエンヌを拠点としたソテール兄弟社(Sauter Freres & Cie)傘下のブランドの一つで少なくとも1960年代中頃までは作られていた模様。黄金期が1940年代～1950年代なのか、その年代と思しきクロノグラフ等が市場によく出回っている。
ピアポントのクロノグラフは写真の時計のようにランデロンのムーブメントを搭載しているものが多く、故に比較的廉価なスイス製クロノグラフとして位置づけられていたであろうことが想像できる。とは言え17石のムーブメントは丁寧に作られているしダイヤルも赤青文字を使った凝った造りで見た目もモダン。
ブレスは初期のフィクソフレックス。金メッキがいい感じのアタリ具合になっており全体的に抜群の雰囲気を持っている。
あと、裏蓋裏にはお決まりの引っ掻き文字で5098、7073、3586、AJ、2 62とある。意味は不明。

Pierpont Watch was one of the brands under the Sauter Freres & Cie located in Bienne in Switzerland. It had made watches until mid 1960s at least. Its golden era might be 1940s and 1950s simply because today we can find lots of Pierpont chronographs and also other types of watches which were supposed to be made in those years.
Pierpont chronograph we can see in the market today most likely has Landeron movement like many other affordable range of Switzerland chronographs at that time. But we can see quite excellent hand job in Landeron 17 ruby movement today even if it was treated as a affordable stuff in the middle of the last century.

The chronograph in photos here has Landeron 48 and adopts red and blue numerals on the nice yellow-ivory dial. The bracelet is very early version of Fixoflex in 1950s. The case and the bracelet are gold plated and have nicely aged taste entirely. The back case is stainless steel.
The backside of the back case has some scratched numbers and alphabets (5098, 7073, 3586, AJ and 2 62). I don't have any idea for their meanings.

1950年代のはじめ、ロレックス社のレン・ポール・ジェネレが、「各業種のプロフェッショナル用ツールとしての腕時計」という新しいコンセプトを見出した。スポーツマンや冒険家に対するエクスプローラ、ダイバーに対するサブマリーナ、ビジネスマンに対するターノグラフがそうだ。それと、忘れてならないのがGMTマスター。
当時世界最大の航空会社だったパンナムは、パイロットが異なる2か所の時間を把握できる時計の開発をロレックスに依頼した。そして1954年にGMTマスターは発表される。特に、レン・ポール・ジェネレとパンナムのキャプテン、フレデリック・リビーが作りだした24時間針と2色回転ベゼルを使ったアイデアは素晴らしい機能美となって多くの人を魅了することになった。
Ref.6542は1954年～1960年まで製造されたが、最初期のバージョンはベゼルがベイクライト製であったため、割れやすいという問題を抱えていた。このためリリースから2～3年程で、ロレックス社はステンレス製ベゼルを持った改良版の製造を開始すると共に、割れてしまったベゼルをステンレス製のものに交換するサービスを始めたらしい。こういった背景により、オリジナルのベイクライトベゼルを持った個体は現存数の少ないヒストリックアイテムとなっている。

写真の時計は、初期のGMTマスターRef.6542。ベイクライトベゼルも状態良好。シリアルナンバーは消えかけていて判読が難しいが、263xxx(一桁目は9かも)と読める。ケースの裏側にはI57の刻印があり、1957年1月～3月に製造されたものと思われる。

この時計はいくつかの味わい深い特徴を備えている。ミラーダイヤルや、小さな24時間針、竜頭ガードが無いむき出しの竜頭、USリベットブレス等がそう。そしてもちろんポップなベイクライト製の赤青ベゼル。しかも赤青ベゼルは6時と18時位置の赤青の境界がなぜか青側にずれており、なんだか楽しい。

In the early 1950s Rene-Paul Jeanneret at Rolex came up with the new concept of watches as practical tools for professionals. The concept was proved to be great successes by all the watches like Explorer for sportsmen and explorers, Submariner for divers and Turn-O-Graph for businessmen. Then Pan-Am which was the world's largest airline wanted a watch that would enable their pilots to keep track of time in two locations. GMT Master was designed with several innovative ideas like a 24 hour hand and a Pepsi color bezel by Rene-Paul Jeanneret and Pan-Am's Captain Frederick Libby in 1954.

GMT Master Ref. 6542 was produced from 1954 to 1960. The first version of Ref. 6542 had a bakelite bezel insert and it was likely to crack. After around 2 or 3 years from its launch Rolex started selling a new version of 6542 with a stainless steel bezel and lots of cracked bakelite bezels were replaced with stainless steel bezels. So today Ref. 6542 with the original bakelite bezel is very rare and a historic item.

This beautiful watch here you see is Rolex GMT Master Ref. 6542 made in 1957. The serial number is not clear to see but it seems to be 263xxx. (The first letter could be 9 instead of 2.) Inside case back is stamped I57 supporting the 1957 production (1st quarter).

The watch has several attractive features like gilt black dial, railroad track minutes chapter, small arrow red 24 hour hand, alternating red and black colors date wheel, USA riveted bracelet and of course bakelite bezel with offset border at 6 and 18.

1931年に北大路魯山人著で出版された本(便利堂印刷所)の言わば再発版(五月書房)で、非常に丁寧に作ってあるという印象。
写真と共に魯山人が明代の古染付101点を解説するという内容であるが、彼の丁重な言い回し、視点の面白さがとても興味深い。

平安時代末期から江戸末期までの古丹波の優品398点がじっくり堪能できる図録。古丹波の優品を収蔵する日本民芸館、兵庫県陶芸館、丹波古陶館の3館からの作品とその他所蔵の作品を合わせたという、まさに集大成的な内容になっているのが嬉しい。
著者序文に、柳宗悦先生の言葉として、「古丹波は”もっとも日本らしき品、貧しさの富を示す品、渋さの極みを示す品”」という引用があるが、この図録を見れば、その言葉の明快さに改めて驚かされる。

This book covers 398 pieces of beautiful old Tanba pots and vases etc. made from 12c to 19c. This book is absolutely the best one to watch and learn all about old Tanba because all Japanese major pottery museums, famous for old Tanba collection especially, (Nihon Mingei Kan, Hyogoken Tougei Kan and Tanba Koto Kan) contributed to the book very much.
In the prologue the author refers the words of Soetsu Yanagi, "Old Tanba is, let's say, very very Japanese. It shows richness of poverty and top of tasteful austerity." You can agree with his words when you read this book.

平安時代～江戸時代まで、時代別に構成。桂又三郎というビッグネームの著作だけあって、内容は周到を極めた感じ。古伊賀専門の図録+古伊賀に関わる様々な解説というややマニアックな本だが、これを読めば古伊賀の全てが勉強できた気になる。そう言えるほど説得力のある網羅性がある。作品の写真は焼物専門のカメラマン菊地正によるものだが、まるで表情を持つ人間のように写真が迫ってくる。

This deluxe book covers most of existing masterpieces of old Iga from 9c to 17c.
The pictures (212 color photos and 130 monochrome photos) are taken by Tadashi Kikuchi who is a famous dedicated photographer for only china and porcelains.
This book also contains detail explanation for history, method, kilns and so on. So we can learn many things from only this book. The explanation is written in Japanese for most of part, but the last several pages (outline history and list of works) are written in English.

素晴らしい写真(原色221点、単色158点)は焼物専門のカメラマン菊地正。
茶陶から雑器まで、古信楽の全貌を網羅した内容。奈良時代～江戸時代まで、時代別に構成されているのも嬉しい限り。図録だけでなく後半1/3位は歴史や窯についての詳しい解説があり、教科書的に読める。

All contents in this book are wonderful and I love the design of the slip case especially.
